came out to car after a night shift, engine turned over but before it would start, it seamed to lose power? when i tried to turn it over again it just would not turn over at all, ( but did start with a push, very easy) could this be a relay?, if so any idea which one, and how do i check. thanks in advance for any help

Sounds more like the battery has reached the end of life. How old is it?

ive had the battery 6 months, but its off a fiesta diesel, 5/6 years old?

That'll be half your problem then, the fiesta diesel (unless its the 1.8 endura) has a crank rating of 500amp with 62 amp hours, the galaxy is 640amp with 71ah (800amp and 100ah pre 2000) so it'll not be able to deliver the maximum current required and will flatten quicker. 5 to 6 years old is the other half of your problem.

Get a new one!

You haven't said what model it is yet.

Also, if it was the starter, it wouldn't turn over.

Does it start when warm? It has suddenly got colder and, if it's a petrol engine, the heavy load and drop in battery volage would give you exactly what you have. Try a jump start which would prove it.

It appears to be a battery problem.

It takes a lot of battery power to turn over a Diesel, yours is a bit on the small size and could have been damaged with continual use.

Only way to be sure is to try a suitable replacement battery from a similar diesel vehicle.

Could well be a bad connection to the starter motor from the battery, check for any fraying or corrosion around the lugs at either end.

It does sound like you have a very poor battery fitted, I strongly suggest you change the battery for a higher capacity deep cold crank model now because you will definitely have problems this winter otherwise.

Whatever happens you need a good battery fitted so it makes sense to get one now.

So it turned over once and not since...

Mine did this a while ago and it turned out to be the starter as you said. However, mine was repairable since the failure was due to the flexible connection on the starter. It had just corroded away. It seemed to be a flexible braid type of copper link so I got to work with a large soldering iron and used some braid from aerial cable folded to about 16 strips in parallel and it held. It does look like it could be a common failure and it will be reasonably obvious once you get it off.

had the battery checked, its ok, checked the charging as well,----------man in the car shop said,"the battery will start almost anything" will try and get the starter motor off and see if it can be checked? Edited by andrew welsh1958

It might be an idea to check for voltage on the starter terminal before you strip it out.......

And don't forget to look for the missing link before binning it. It goes from the fixed terminal to one on a rubber mount. Mine had corroded away completely and it was not immediately obvious that it had ever existed.
